Me playing acoustic guitar in a church

Dreadnought acoustic guitars are easier to record, why? And about X…

My dreadnought.

The big guitar vs the little one

Been having a lot of fun recording acoustic guitars I own. I’ve discovered my $600 Recording King Torchlight records better than my very expensive small bodied concert Breedlove. I have been talking to folks “in the know,” and they get better results from dreadnoughts too. Why?

Some of the mics around here.

Mics, mics, and more mics.

I’ve tried mid/side, condensers, using a 57 and a ribbon in different places, and the dreadnought sounds better. So what do I have to do to make my expensive guitar sound expensive?

12th fret folks read this:

First, there’s this 12th fret rule that held me up a long time. People will tell you in this business to put a mic on the 12th fret. That’s general advice. The accurate version of that is put mic where the neck and body meet. On a prewar copy like my Recording King, that’s a full four frets away from 12th fret. It’s easy to hear the difference. Aim that mic at the neck joint. If that happens to be 12th fret, great! But a lot of times it isn’t. Neck joint > 12th fret.

I have found this to be a great tool.

A Cloudlifter is a great purchase.

Cloudlifters on smaller guitars help out. The headroom of a clean 25 dB boost gives you loads more articulation and automation options. It’s basically properly gain staging.

My Breedlove is loaded with qualities I enjoy in person but can’t seem to record. Fortunately, I have a dreadnought I love for recording. Couch guitar. But that’s fine. It’s a great couch guitar!

Different guitars, different strokes.

I like a condenser mixed with a SM57 today on that Breedlove. I use a Myrtle kinda’ off on the body end side. And I use an SM57 with cloudlifter on the neck joint. This, I find, gives me tone I want out of that thing.

The dreadnought has a few more options. It sounds great with one mic, 2 mics. It even sounds great with 3 mics. Between ribbons, condensers, and dynamic mics, the dread loves them all.

I’m a huge fan of Dean Johnson. I listen to his music in the car. My car says he looks exactly like Don Johnson. Funny.

It’s actually good news.

I think this is good news for most folks while maybe not so much for me. Haha. 🤣

Dreadnoughts are common, many are affordable. My Breedlove is rare, unique. I’d rather everyone have good sound than just me. Playing the Breedlove on my couch is still a treat for me, even if I don’t record with it as much. It has a very old ancient spruce top. It’s snappy and complex. Hard to capture. That’s okay.

Mics like “boom.”

The dread has booming lows and highs. Mics love that shit. The Breedlove isn’t a booming kinda’ vibe.

I hope you experiment.

I hope you’re the type to play around. I’ve only ever been able to get starting points for things online. Once I get the advice in my room, with my stuff, tweaking is required. The 12th fret thing is gone. Glad for that. Neck joint, now. Helped me.

Enough acoustic shit, let’s play bass.

What’s in a frequency?

Experimenting and thinking about frequencies and ranges has helped me a lot. I am working on an album I want to be really enjoyable. Frequencies are pretty much everything. I’m using tons more automation and slow EQ curves and less and less plugins or inserts. It’s not the modulation or the verb… it’s the frequencies. Took a long time to gather that information. Just passing it along. -END

A song with religious imagery. I don’t mind religious music. I just don’t like religion. Sorry to be so complicated.

2nd Half – You X people

It will make you crazy, but at least you won’t be lonely.
This used to be a dealbreaker. What happened? (That’s your fault if you are on X). This man went on to fail, and get a trillion dollars for it. Dipshits.

Look if you’re on X, you need to know what most folks think of you.

Just saw the education secretary’s post on Ida B Wells in the news. She posted it on X. Propaganda, AI, on Ida B Wells.

Here’s the deal, X-men, and I’m sorry no one has told you, (but I bet they have), X makes you stupid. You’re probably already pretty stupid. How would you know? You’re stupid.

This screenshot of a social media post by Education Secretary Linda McMahon includes an AI generated image by Gemini. (Obtained by The Washington Post) (Maybe some folks out there see how ridiculous this is?)(Can’t be sure.)

A solution.

Relax, there’s hope. Just ditch X! Done. But there’s no way you can look at that shit every day and be smarter for it. Has this thought never occurred to you, man?

Just because MSN and PBS, ProPublica, and  whoever else have X accounts, doesn’t mean you need one. It’s run by Nazis. Helped Trump get elected. There’s nothing good about it. This isn’t an opinion, by the way. It’s literally horrible for you. Google “is X good for you?” See what happens!

Again, used to be a dealbreaker.. but because of X.. he got a raise.. That’s because of you if you are on X. Thanks!

What’s more harsh? A nazi salute or leaving X? If you aren’t leaving X, you’re saluting.

If I seem harsh, it’s because I don’t like Nazis and how they have normalized bad behavior.. X is their tool for that. So yeah, I fucking hate it. And I hate you’re on it, fucking still.

Consider the fact that you must be a little brainwashed. It’s okay, just quit.

You’re brainwashed if you’re logging into X all the time. You’re part of the problem. And you need help. But first, ditch X.. for the sake of us all.
