A different take. (A new thing.)

Classic fun movie.

A new topic around here.

Going to start posting views of folks I like and disagree with them. Funsies.

This one may be great for comedy. I wouldn’t know. I just know I’ve heard it as a singer and it doesn’t work for me.

Steve Martin!?!?

Watched Steve Martin talk about never looking at your audience. Maybe that’s useful for a comedian. Look over their heads. Steve Martin is a great entertainer but as someone who sings in front of folks, I have to disagree.

There’s lots of reasons. But it boils down to performance.

After we hug and joke, I’ll be ready to scrap with Steve about this.

He’s a comedian and banjo bad ass. I’m usually singing, probably the difference.

As a singer, I sing to where I’m looking. Electronics make sure folks will hear me, not my projection. This is hard to keep in mind looking at the back wall all the time.

I actually go back and forth on this one too. But right now I’m with him. Let you know when it’s different,

I will sing to your face. Watch out!

I stare at folks while singing. It helps a lot of things. I concentrate on performing and the message of the song, not blowing everyone away. I sing at the right volume. And I end up having the energy required for the whole night.

If I’m looking at the back, this doesn’t happen. It sounds worse because I’m yelling. And I get tired quickly.

He’s always so funny.

Thanks, Steve. But I think comedy’s different.

So while Steve Martin may be a great comedian and lovely banjo player, I’m sticking to my way of singing. The back wall isn’t even a person. It doesn’t need me yelling at it.

If you have a million dollar personality, go for it!

About relying on personality not material, I think that’s easier when you’re Steve Martin. The rest of us have to rehearse.

I love a many of his movies and banjo, but I don’t find any of this advice applicable at all, for singing.

Thanks for the laughs, Steve!

First “A different take” in the books

You can still like folks and disagree with them. What this is. Love to Steve.

Return to home.

I’ve been playing and recording lots of music for folks. Every day. No gripes! Keep sending stuff to [email protected]. Thanks!
