I’ve been told on social media (when I was on it) and at shows, “keep it positive.” You want me to lie? Is that it?
I love people, always have. I love variety. I love honest thoughts and relationships. I love melody and lyrics. I love feeling good. Why would an artist read all the things I love and offer me hope? Truth is as important as anything in art, why not start there? Hope is not truth, not even truthful. If you feel hope, there’s lies somewhere in your news chain.
As a songwriter, my goal isn’t communicating. It’s making something relatable for a person out there who needs it. I talk fine, can talk hope if I feel it. But I don’t. If I were to sound hopeful in any capacity, I’d be dishonest. No one needs false, empty hope.
What we need is truth. There’s a severe lacking of it in just about anything I can turn on. I aim to make a difference with how I truly feel, even if it isn’t hopeful. “Look on the bright side” doesn’t fly around here.
Many folks are even in danger now. How does it make sense to talk about hope without acknowledging the danger they’re in? “Hope you make it through it, even though it’s all in your head and I’m doing great.” What that says.
Offer truth in your creations. Wanna’ be on the “good guys” team? Start by being honest. Doesn’t have to be serious, doesn’t even have to make sense. But if there’s truth in it, someone will hear it and be better off for it. Can’t say the same for hope.
As long as I’ve been alive folks have been telling me Country Music is 3 chords and the truth. There’s nothing in that about hope.
