What’s my deal with the South?

A lot of folks here foster biases held against them by folks elsewhere. As if to say, “damn right.” I think it is humorous.

My home.

I love the southern USA. I love music and food. The weather is hot but we manage. I like little social clubs scattered around here for everything from HAM radio to Bridge. I like manners. A lot of folks around here are taught manners and not much else. Not their fault. See last article.

I love the people of the South, yes it’s true. I even have a MAGA friend or two. I’m not easy on them, but they stick around. Now I kind of like them. They’re human beings. It isn’t hard for me. I pretty much like anything with a pulse.

I live close to the actual river. It really is red. Not like most rivers. It looks almost viscous and muddy.

In just 5 years.

I like the dichotomies in Texas in particular. In 2020, for example, Texas was second in the nation to California in votes for Biden. 5 years ago. Where’d you go Beto? It’s a different place today. 5 years.

5 years. The impact of propaganda and cuts in education have become even more apparent. This is not new. Imagine all this X 10. That’s the South. It’s been going on at least 50 years. Immeasurable damage.

Many folks are brought up thinking of sports as a ticket to a good life. Texas and football have a thing together. But if they weren’t poor already, and were more educated, their brains all the sudden become a football. More reliable too. Also more safe.

“You get what you vote for.”

When I moved back to Texas and got online I started hearing “you get what you vote for,” and “no sympathy,” when complaining about lawmakers. That was not from MAGA’s. That was from fellow democrats whom I’d voted with most my life. I didn’t say shit about being from Texas. I’d just gotten back from New York. It was them. Their impression of the South. That’s a reason I like it too.

The Key. Next paragraph.

Key:

What democrats who write off the southern half don’t realize is that while yes there are MAGAs here, there’s a lot of other folks too. What’s worse, the democrats who talk about human rights and social justice don’t seem to care about the black folks, or Mexicans, LGBTQ, or even other democrats here. Been told by many that I get what I vote for.

I think in the end, “Don’t Mess With Texas” did more harm than good. Nobody messed with it. So it got rank.

The John Wayne thing…

When I was up north there was a pervasive image of John Wayne and Texas. Folks seemed a little disappointed that the songwriter from Texas wasn’t a cowboy. In case you aren’t familiar, that’s bias.

So, while a lot of folks talk about bias, a lot of folks have bias. I do, surely, and I’m biased towards bias. What this means for me is actually good news. Bias has become an opportunity for learning and improvement.

It occurred to me not long ago that seeing the holes in my knowledge was an opportunity, not something to be ashamed of.

Start filling the holes in knowledge with learning, not bias.

Only logic is required to come to the conclusion that not everyone in Texas is an asshole or cowboy. Maybe you have more in common with the people in your head than you think. People here do that with Democrats. Everyone does it. I hope we realize this soon.

return to home.

Got lost in a jam yesterday about one of my very favorite things. Enjoy. Free on bandcamp too. I make jams right now. I am experimenting, If that sounds fun, you are welcome to listen. It’s all free so it’s more about your curiosity than me trying to make a buck.

I am Kelly.

There’s a lot of things I am able to do in the music space. If you need a hand with a project on the creative or technical sides, give me a holler. I don’t charge anything unless you have to pay it, some do. I just want to work on music with folks. Be buddies for a few days. All I am after. Thanks! [email protected]

I like dogs. I like weenie dogs and Chihuahuas the most. But pretty much any dog is straight if we have time to get to know each other. Humans be that way too.
