What is Djembe Funk?

Good morning and I’m happy to report I’m going to release some instrumental funk stuff soon. I call it “Djembe Funk.”

My fretless bass. It’s a bad ass bass.

3 of me, (at least).

It’s a three piece band, I play the instruments. Djembe, fretless bass, and Les Paul. I basically put my favorite instruments together to make my favorite kind of music. Why not? Right?

I’ve been listening to funk a long time. I saw George Clinton as a teenager with my good friend to this day. The crowd was massive, all moving in unison. There were 20 or so fabulous musicians on the stage getting down. Beautiful.

George Clinton said the reason his band got so big was James Brown kept firing awesome musicians. He was right. They were awesome.

My funk band is just me. I’ll do the best with what I got. I like a 3 piece format. I love the instruments. I’m sure others will make appearances, but the core band is djembe, Les Paul, fretless bass – played by yours truly.

Funk is mostly what I listen to these days.

Funk is special to me. It’s protest, it’s a vibe, it’s spastic, it’s solid. I love it when it gets funky. I have been needing to do this awhile.

I’ll probably start off with an EP. I’m nearly done with one and I feel good about it. No vocals so far, but I’m not opposed to them. I just don’t care if they are in there or not unless I feel them. I often don’t. The jam by itself is plenty.

I’m doing it all here; writing, performing, mixing, mastering. It may not be the most pro sounding instrumental funk one man band you ever heard. But it’ll be fine. I’ve let some friends hear some stuff. I feel good about it.

My Epiphone ’59 Les Paul with Burstbuckers, a sweet finish, and a baseball bat neck. Like it was made for me.

I’m very busy in music, thanks so much.

Djembe Funk will be coming soon. I’m also producing a band out of St Louis. The protest band, Boots on the Ground, is hard at work. I’m producing a local troubadour, Lloyd Mark Sutton. I played some bass for a rap label in NYC. They liked me, said I was good at “bouncy.” Lots of music, lots of musicians. Djembe Funk is just me. My thing for fun. If anyone is into that.

I’m am not opposed to guests or features for Djembe Funk music. Maybe you want a solo, or to sing a top-line, hit me up. I bet we can do something. [email protected]

My bass was a custom job. The headstock reads, “Rhymes with Orange.” I love it.

This band has been around a while.. time to make it available.

I’ve been making solo Djembe Funk for a year or so. I’m ready to show some stuff. I’m able to commit to it. And I truly love the stuff that comes out of these three instruments together.

I might have it out before the weekend. Not wasting a lot of time here. Music is just sitting on my hard drive. I’d like to check it out a final time, then I’ll upload. It will be free on BandCamp. I’ll keep you posted.

I like a lot of different kinds of songs. This “band” is only one kind of music. I need that sometimes. Funk gets in me, have to let it out. Thanks for listening and thanks for being you.

Return to home.

My djembe drum
The djembe is one of my favorite instruments.

I have a tune up on bandcamp called “Instrumental Sludge Funk.” It is along the lines of the Djembe Funk band. Enjoy.
