I’ve been told throughout my life that musicians should be humble. I disagree, on levels.
The main reason is whoever is saying “be humble” to musicians isn’t being humble by saying that. Therefore, I do not have to listen to what they’re saying. They can’t even do it themselves.
Also, I think musicians don’t get credit like other professions for spending time on music. If the persona they show to folks when they get a chance highlights their work, that’s natural. At least to me it is. You never say, “be humble,” for example, to a plumber. But folks get away with saying it to performers all the time.

We should talk about what being humble is, it’s having reverence. I’m usually always against that. When we talk about humbling folks, we talk about tearing them down. Why don’t we stop doing that?
I realize folks out there like their performers to be humble servants. But that’s just not rock and roll, sorry. Not what I signed up for and in fact, very few musicians I admire act that way. I don’t do “servant.” No one should, welcome to the 90’s.
I love performers of all kinds but honest and daring are main characteristics I’m drawn to. Sometimes if you’re willing to be both, “being humble” goes out the window.
You may not agree and I look forward to reading your website about it. Or, feel free to email, [email protected]. I love having nice discussions. Thanks. 🙏
