Getting gritty.
I wrote parts of this song as far back as high-school, so forgive me if I’m a little sentimental. I have had a love affair with jazzy sounds in the south my whole life. There’s ragtime elements, there’s blues, there’s even an essence of a small church in some of it. There’s poverty, laughs, sorrow, determination, and skill, even more!

Ragtime and the bounce.
Scott Joplin to Dr John. That’s kinda’ my sweet spot most days. This song is that, for me. Well, the best I can do. (At the moment!)

Southern Gothic
I love Flannery O’Connor too. When I get that “Southern Gothic” compliment on another song, it sends me through the roof. Don’t know how I conveyed the scene I was aiming for, but that’s it. Feels good.

With djembe, pleasant accidents can happen.
The original version of “Sold Out,” had a drum set. For reasons we won’t go into, the drummer is now off the credits. Don’t have the funds for another drummer so I got to experimenting with djembe. Works fine and that’s the main takeaway for me and where I’m at working on new material for the studio.
It could be just me, feel free to correct me sometime, ([email protected]), but the smaller feel of the djembe and the resonance of certain hits reminds me of older than drumset sounds more appropriate to the feel of the song anyway. I dig that. Enjoy!
