What is a producer?
If you assist with music and sell it, you’re a producer. A producer turns ideas into a ‘product.’ Product, producer. They’re even almost spelled the same.

Production is a stop along the journey.
Music starts as an idea of sorts. Maybe a melody or a chorus, simply a good turn of phrase sometimes. It goes through writing then it goes through production. Production’s goal is to make the music pleasing for its target audience. After production, it should be ready for folks to look at it. The producer helped the piece transition from an idea phase, to a product phase.
Producing with style, or not.

There’s different kinds of producers. Some are very hands on. Some, not so much. Rick Rubin, for instance, knows how to make hit records. But he also knows how to piss musicians off with never being around. In the industry, he’s often referred to as “Willy,” as in “Will he show up today?”
A producer like me doesn’t focus so much on method as much as they do results. I’ll work anywhere on anyone’s stuff. I enjoy that. I like weird hours and being hands on, I enjoy that too. But if I didn’t have music I liked listening to as a result, I’d probably read one of Rick’s books. Haha.
The style of producing a producer does is made valid by what comes out of the speakers. If it’s a good sounding record, doesn’t matter how it was produced. It’s simply a good job.

One of my favorite producers, T Bone Burnett, said in an interview his goal was to squash feelings of self-consciousness. He said, “self-consciousness is the opposite of creativity.” I like that spot. When there’s more than one person in the room and you’re all providing input and relying on each other’s feedback, magic usually happens.

Producing beats.
There’s more than one kind of producer nowadays because things got dumb. Folks who make beats for songs that end up being produced call themselves producer too. It’s a confusing time. However, they’re making and selling beats. So, they are providing a product. That means it went through some kind of production. So, whatevs.

Need production?
Producing music is my jam. I enjoy it very much. It doesn’t have to be my songs. I enjoy it equally with other folks’ ideas. I like pleasing sound. Doesn’t matter if I’m on a team or by myself. I’d be honored if you considered me for your small budget music. No commitment, no money, just some chances to work.
Production makes a big difference. We aren’t just talking mixing. We’re talking layers, vibe, soundscape. If I can be of assistance with any of that, happy to give it my best. [email protected]
