New Djembe Funk Jam: The Dinosaur’s Turn.

I love my little dinosaur woodblock my father sent me for a present. I collect percussion doodads. This is definitely one of my favorites.

I get excited for jamming, even alone.

Music is the ultimate head game for me and I am glad for it. I love visiting, hanging out, and chit-chat. I don’t get to do that stuff often. That’s where music comes in. I get to entertain myself and make something. It’s not a bad deal. Really.

The self-sufficiency of music is its greatest asset, to me. It’s not what I can do for music, but what making music does for me, to put it one way. My family doesn’t have to worry about me if I am making music. I am preoccupied. I have found something to keep me engaged, and it’s me. I think a lot of folks throughout my life have looked for something for themselves that does what music does for me. This isn’t lost on me. Very grateful.

My wife, Keri, helps me a lot with visual stuff. I love her eyes, among other things.

The Dinosaur is Inspiring.

New instruments can bring new ways of thinking. I did not expect that with this little guy from Central America I got for Christmas from my parents in New York. It has a great sound and it does a couple of different things. It even sounds different if you turn the mallet around to the skinny end. Useful. I love messing with it. It inspired this tune. I just wanted to use it on something. No one responded to the want ad for wooden dinosaur, just me again. It’s cool, but y’all missed out.

Where the Djembe Funk project is at.

I am working on a Djembe Funk concept record. This is a one-off inspired by new instruments. The concept record is a bigger deal. Might hire out mixing if anyone can stand to listen to it. Haven’t decided. But the writing is going on and it is going well for that. This was just a “yippee.”

I have a soundcloud too. Although I am not sure why.

“Lowrider vibes”

I love cool shit. I love cool vibes. I love California. I love good weather. I am not a huge automobile fan but they can’t all be winners. The cool, slightly dangerous sound is very appealing to me. Always has been. I think it mellows me out. I need all of that I can get.

Guitar has been a lot more fun since a Ribbon Mic and Small Tube Amp. I can’t say it sounds hands down better, but it is hands down more fun. And THAT sounds better. Pro-Tip.

Showing folks shit before it is done.

I’ve always been really terrible at showing folks shit. I am really into it, I am so excited like a kid. Wish I didn’t do that. I showed a few friends things I was excited about here. Experiencing regret for that. Work in progress. No one anywhere except Keri has heard this version. It rocks. But I showed early versions to friends that didn’t rock. Feel bad about that. I have worked on this my whole life. I am still not good at it. That could mean I will never be good at it. Sorry to my friends. Price you pay. I pay too, if that helps. Could have to do with bipolar and extroverted thing but I like to think it’s because music is rad and must be shared. I’ve always been more excited while making the music than I have been when it’s over. I’ll learn someday, or I won’t. Sorry.

My Breedlove Concert Manzanita from Bend, OR made from ancient spruce they claimed. Numbered 35/50. This guitar and me are connected. Getting away from the dreadnought took 30 years. Glad for it.

I am talking about a release on this post and I’d like to thank some folks I showed early versions to. Dad, Jaime, Dino, The Doc, Brian, Dustin, Erica, and Brady..(and anyone else), thanks so much for being patient with me. You haven’t heard this version yet, if you can stomach another listen. I super appreciate you folks for being my crew. Then there’s Keri and Sadie. I pretty much live in gratitude for their presence. Just feeling all grateful for these people. Don’t know if there’s music in me without them.

I play my 59 Epiphone Les Paul a whole lot. I don’t even mess with the knobs yet. Seems to get what I want with just the toggle switch. I like that feature. But the overdriven sound with the old burstbucker pickups is all I need.
