Leaving in the morning. Road trip!

I’ve always loved road trips.

Headed South.

Tomorrow, we are headed to Houston to record an album with one of my favorite producers, bkbirge. I’m excited for the music, the trip, and the camaraderie.

Sometimes with work comes..friends?

I’ve been working hard to save up for the trip. I ended up making friends doing that. I’ve been producing. Lloyd Mark Sutton, a troubadour close-by, has enlisted me to help him with his album. I’ve done engineering for him before, now I’m producin’.

Lloyd Mark Sutton is a friend and songwriter. We make music together.

I’m very happy Mark asked me to record and produce him. It’s given me loads of tips I’ll use in my album. Mark is also very happy with my work so far and that feels great, honestly. Goals.

Trying on an older way of life, again.

I mentioned I’m recording with bkbirge in Houston. He has a computer-less studio. Rack mounts and boards, no screens. It seems like as good of an opportunity as any to try out one of those digital detoxes. All music, no phones. So, I’m doing it for 10 days. Scary.

Keri and I wrote this song, Kentucky. The Doc helped us arrange it and provided rhythm section and mixing. We did this online. Now we get to hang out in person. Fun.

A new music project, a new process.

I’ve been writing music. Got a folder of ideas. But I didn’t write the whole songs. I want to put a bow on them with “the doc,” (that’s what I call bkbirge.) I want him to write parts with me. I’m really looking forward to jamming as much as recording. Made room for that. I’ve been making music online with the doc for years. There’s some sense of victory in finally getting to meet up and record.

Written on a lonely day. Keri sang it beautifully and The Doc provided strings, including a bowed psaltery. “My Own Doing” is free on bandcamp.

We worked online before, now in person!

One thing I love about the doc’s ears is the way he hears Keri’s voice. He’s got a knack for it. We hear it kinda’ the same all the time. I can tell by how he mixes her. Will be nice to see what he does in person in that aspect and many more. He’s a talented arranger and producer.

Most of all, I feel really thankful to the folks in my life that I get to do this.

The main thing I love about being a producer/songwriter/musician is getting to do stuff just like this. Making music with friends is a real treat. Going on trips is necessary sometimes. It feels wonderful to get to do this.

I hope if you’re a songwriter and need production help, you find it. I’m available after the trip. Shoot me an email, [email protected].

I bid you all a very fond farewell. See ya’ in 10 days or so. Stay out of trouble. Ha.

Return to home.

Me & Keri.
Kev Sharp and I told the bass and drums to take the day. Was a ton of fun.
