Babette’s Feast is a wonderful film.
Was talking to a friend about Babette’s Feast. It’s a film from years ago. It’s one of my favorites. There’s a tranquility to it where I know nothing is going to happen that startles me or grosses me out. I tend to gravitate to those kinds of movies.
I can see the writer’s intention of an allegory. It’s the last supper. But it’s so loose, even I enjoy it. For one thing, Babette in the film is way cooler than Christ has ever been portrayed on film or in the Bible. She’s smart, even stealthy. A survivor. Can’t say that about JC.
The difference…
The biggest difference is she actually cares about folks and is amused by them. She even feels gratitude to them. We have no evidence in the Bible or in film that was the case for Christ.
Christ was determined and even fixated on being all of mankind’s only shot at redemption. That is not like Babette at all. I think it has a lot to do with the psyche of his believers too. Post mortem redemption is a scam to a survivor. Not the goal. But it sure makes it easier for folks to kill you off if you believe that shit.

Here’s some Teutonic Chronic.
Beowulf is a tough book. Maybe one of the toughest. I can only barely make it through summaries and analysis of it. But I do know they made fun of these new “Christians.” The Christians didn’t put up a fight at all. Some even lent their neck for the axe.
Control comes in a lot of forms. Tim Dunn down in Odessa Texas preaching about “if your profits are in heaven then your heart will be there too,” as an oil tycoon owner of a church and many Texas politicians, even Washington ones too.. is a form of control. He doesn’t believe what he says. But he needs you to believe it so he can have so much. It’s disgusting.
Many many folks around here in Texas think Christ blesses you with finances for doing his bidding. Well, what’s his bidding? It’s squashing those around you telling them to get in line and it’s all gravy when you’re dead. It’s not about god at all, it’s about life. Money, resources, space, convenience. Religion in its current prosperity gospel form has to do with Christians playing hungry hippo with what’s out there. That’s fine if that’s how you want to spend your time. Just realize, that’s a child’s game.
It has to do with priorities?
I suppose that’s what bothers me about religion. I know folks that want me to go to their church but won’t walk around their own neighborhood in sweatpants without carrying a loaded gun. Where’s your priorities?
I know folks that will raise thousands of dollars for gold decor in the chapel, but won’t open the kitchen one or two days a week to the hungry. Again, what’s your concept of helping people?

Let’s all believe in “Improvement,” mmkay?
If you want me to “believe” in anything, it needs to involve improving this world for my friends and family. If you just worry about me going to heaven, I’m very dubious of that.
I don’t think in terms of heaven and hell anymore, but I haven’t lost right and wrong. If the rich folks in the world are taking the poor for a proverbial ride and calling it Jesus, that’s wrong. I’m totally against it.
return to home.
