Just be yourself.
As a musician there’s a lot of emphasis on being yourself from family to marketers, and even producers. I don’t disagree for anyone. But I feel it’s wrong to say that without telling you what will happen.

Warning, you won’t have as many friends if you are unique. Like, literally.
You will lose “friends.” You will gain enemies too. Don’t know how it happens, but it will. Every time. In fact, some new enemies may have been old friends. It’s pure shit they told you to be yourself. Then disappeared the moment you did it.
I no longer say “be yourself” since I became more open about myself. I say “think about being yourself.” There’s real consequences and most of them aren’t in the “pros” column. Especially now. It could get you deported, or even killed.
Get out of the way or hop on..
I’ve been through the wringer with fluctuations in crowds because I visualize myself moving on a line and most crowds stand still. I probably won’t stick around long, gotta’ keep movin’.
This is precisely why it feels lonelier the smarter you become as you get older. You’re very lucky if anyone keeps you company on your path.
How development and a music career can resemble each other.
An area I struggled with in development has to do with the better I get, the lonelier it is. A music career can be like that too. Isn’t always, but it can be.
If you are yourself out there, congratulations. I’ve been exploring and experimenting with being myself for a while and I wouldn’t change it. I would figure out how to be self-sufficient in interests and activities, unfortunately. Though many folks advise being yourself, very few folks seem to care for individuals. Even in a one on one conversation, they frequently talk about crowds they hate. It would be a shame if you were one of them.
“Be yourself,” is complicated advice. “Think about being yourself,” is a lot better. Folks won’t like it. If you don’t know, or aren’t ready for that, you’ve been misled about the “be yourself” thing.
