Local music work is amazing.
I’ve been very busy this week recording and mixing, trying to help local troubadours. I was even asked to play some instruments along with. I woke up early and was bored, got the fretless bass out. Made some bass l’m happy with. Hope the client likes it.
Goals.
My goal is to assist folks getting what they want out of what they create, sound-wise. I hope folks feel proud and happy when they hear themselves. It can be tricky. What I want may not be what they want. Only what they want is important.
Folks are on different levels. Or they can be not playing a game entirely. They aren’t going to meet you where you’re at most often. If you’re helping them make a song, you have to meet them where they’re at.
I’m just helping when it comes to clients and other musicians.
One of the reasons I’m lucky enough to find work is I don’t have a vision of my own for mixing or producing. I want what I feel the client would like. It’s more important to me to help the flesh and bone person I’m with than nearly anyone online, or my reputation. This isn’t my song. It’s theirs. I’m just helping if I’m able.
Been in a few recording situations where the “producer” did not know this and every one of them was disastrous. There’s just not enough room in most studios for two bosses. There’s person paying me? Guess what? They’re the boss.
It’s about providing a service. It’s not about my vision.
I provide services. To me, service isn’t about me. It’s an opportunity to forget myself a while. I need that. I can dwell on problems or issues all day. Service gets me outside of that. Sometimes, when I’m feeling bad, I look for things I can do for folks. I know from experience, it helps me feel better.
Now is an excellent time for service.
If anyone is like me, now is a good time to get some service in. Doesn’t have to change the world. But it might change one person. That’s success in the service industry.
