Gray Matters came on and I had to say something.
I throw our music in bandcamp playlists with other folks. Gray Matters just played and I wanted to talk about it because it has been a big help to us.
Keri and I wrote Gray Matters shortly after Tom Petty passed away. I was dealing with some issues as well trying to “live and let live” someone I had beef with. This song came out when I needed it. When we finished it there in the living room in Henrietta, I got overwhelmed like I do sometimes and cried. I don’t know why I can’t just watch a movie like everyone else. Sometimes it takes pouring my guts out and listening to the tape.

Personnel:
AKA NATRAT is a friend of mine in the northwest. He plays bass and drums. There’s so much pep and energy in his work. I enjoy it. Brady Jo in New York mixed it all down. He played that lead too. If you don’t know Brady Jo, you’re missing out. Mastering and claps done by bkbirge down in Houston. He is a good friend. Working with him on a project soon. Can’t wait. I love working with folks here in person or online. Feel free to contact me if you think I’d be a good fit for something. Thanks. [email protected]

The Jeff Lynne influence.
I mentioned earlier that Tom Petty had passed away around this time. I don’t have the affinity with Rick Rubin producing Tom Petty like I do Jeff Lynne’s production. I’m sorry Rick Rubin fans. I can’t argue with the fact he makes hit records. But I can say I like Jeff Lynne’s style more, and that’s okay. I own this place and haven’t even put in comments so this entry doesn’t get muddied by Rick Rubin gurus. I love it.
Lynne had a sound that reminds me of listening to my favorite songs on the radio. The air in his songs sizzled. Rubin seems stale in comparison, to me.

Why listen to old songs?
There is pressure on artists from folks they sign up to and from themselves to put out steady music despite not getting paid for it. Even without getting a thank you. I don’t have this inclination anymore. It’s ready when it’s ready. In the meantime, there’s nothing wrong with our back catalogue. Unless you have already listened to it a bunch. Thanks. I’m not in a hurry to bury songs I still get a kick out of. So many folks haven’t heard it yet, it’s worth while to bring it up for me. Inevitably, someone else will get a kick out of it too. All I need.
Gray Matters is for everyone.
Gray Matters is a song I hope anyone can enjoy. It has helped me over the years and continues to do so to this day. It is about conflict and moving on. To me, that topic never gets old.
