I don’t wanna’ say “pop” or “pop-country” because this phenomenon can happen in any genre. However, to hear an example of it right now, turn on any pop-country station.
Imagine having an unlimited budget to make music. You’d have great musicians, amazing studios and mixing, scores of production assistance. But how much do fresh melodies and insightful lyrics cost? They must cost a fortune. They’re completely absent in a ton of modern music.

Stale progressions and cliches for lyrics are fine for most people. But for me, they’re a turn off. I’m simply past that. It’s okay if you’re not into more robust music and that’s what you dig. Maybe you haven’t been studying it your whole life. I have. That’s the difference. It doesn’t mean you’re “less than.” It means we like different things. No big wup. This article isn’t about you. It’s about budgets.
All I’m saying is there’s got to be a place for these popular musicians to get lyrics and fresh melodies. They have the budget. They have the talent. What’s the hold up? And why does it take 30 of them to “write” a trite song?
The difference between pop & indie sounds is often budget. But more often these days, it’s freshness and insight. If you are in the market for those things, you listen to indies. No choice, still. Maybe one day they’ll pay one of us to help them write something meaningful. I promise you, they can afford it.
