Headstock of my fretless bass. Reads "Rhymes with orange." Just like bro country dudes rhyme their chorus to the chorus of the songs they're ripping off.

BroCountry Covers. Let them hear you laugh.

hope you have boots on.. it gets deep in this one

I’ve recently been made aware of a couple of BroCountry cover songs that I have to share and talk about.

Can we stop ripping off black folks? Thanks.

Both of these tunes rip off black folks and I’m sick of it. Not only do they steal music, they steal the name of a legendary black pianist like no one would care. I do.

First up we have the band, Locash with “Isn’t She Country” set to Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely.”

Locash

Isn’t She Country

I don’t know how you don’t call this stealing. It’s also insulting. Locash was like, “we just need the melody, we got the words. Do we get a discount?” Not to mention the thought that someone might like it, bizarre. An artist’s intuition doesn’t happen unless you’re an artist. That’s for sure. No one on this song deserves that moniker.

Next up we have Jelly Roll and Dustin Lynch, “Chevrolet,” set to “Drift Away” by Dobie Gray. Every time this chorus comes on either in real life or in my brain, I bust a gut laughing. Know why? Because it’s hilariously bad.

Jelly Roll Morton (wiki)

Let’s talk about Jelly Roll for a minute. (For those that don’t know “Jelly Roll” Morton). Now, Jelly Roll Morton is a legend and you’ve run across him if you’ve looked into Jazz at all. This Jelly Roll nowadays, even though he stole Jelly Roll Morton’s name, he didn’t steal his vibe. That’s a shame. He just kept stealing songs like this. (Incidentally, Jelly Roll Morton’s band was called “The Red Hot Peppers.” Nobody gets out alive! Jelly Roll wasn’t the first Jelly Roll Morton thief. Won’t be the last.)

We have got to stop ripping off black folks and start honoring their contributions to music. This is advertisement dressed up as a hit tune. It even advertises a lifestyle sans black folks, using black folks’ songs. Everyone should be pissed after they’re done laughing about how ridiculously awful this is. It’s theft and it’s desecration, honestly. Want to make something sacred in America? Be like me, make it Black Music. Listen to it and post the artists. Don’t steal what you can and call it your own!

Hank Williams (wiki)

I’m making rap Hank Williams songs. Not going to mention Hank at all. I’ll even change his words. See if anyone minds. I may get away with it, hell. I’m not black.

Palate cleanser, just me goofing around for a minute on fretless bass. Then some final thoughts and even some links. Enjoy.

Follow-up thoughts and some links:

Stevie Wonder has a great Wiki. I’d start there for reading. For listening, my favorite Stevie is anything he did in the 70’s. To me he was fired up with a great band for a long time, pretty much the whole 70’s. He owned that decade, (in my opinion).

Dobie Gray performed “Drift Away.” His delivery can’t be duplicated. WE KNOW THIS. But if you can steal Jelly Roll’s name, I guess you have no problem pooping all over Dobie Gray.

Dobie Gray

Just listen to the man, the real one. The piano is so amazing. Some folks call this the first Jazz song. Do you understand how important Jelly Roll Morton is? This one song is more vital to culture and a solid contribution to the world of music than the whole genre of BroCountry. Obviously BroCountry doesn’t even exist without it, Enjoy. This song is a doozy:

If you are interested in an in depth take down of “Isn’t She Country” by Locash, I recommend this. It’s a very necessary thorough flogging of the nimrods who thought this song was a good idea. Enjoy, (hilarious..may have some cuss words).

Thanks, have fun. Stop stealing. If you want to make music, practice an instrument. Any instrument. I love my djembe, it’s easy to bang on and gets me going. I like how loud it is too. I like looking up rhythms, learning their names, modifying them, I also like recording it. That’s just the djembe! Every time I notice I’m better at it feels like improvement in a wholesome and real way. None of that happens with theft. You just get made fun of by folks like me. Thieves suck. Always. Take care.
